Networked Information Processing and Changing Attitudes to Privacy in Japan

Dr Andrew A. Adams, of the University of Reading will discuss his research in Japan on issues of privacy. he spent nine months last year at Meiji funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering. From the event description:

There is a myth amongst researchers that there is no such thing as ‘Privacy’ in Japan. Dr Adams refutes that and shows that the advent of networked information processing of personal data has brought Japanese attitudes to information privacy to a highly similar position to Western attitudes.

Grounded in the social and psychological literature about Japan, this work explains the emergence of Japanese legal protection for personal data in recent years.

WEB 2.NO: Anxieties about the Future of the Internet

Prof. Jonathan Zittrain of the Oxford Internet Institute and Harvard’s Berkman Center will be giving a talk on Tuesday 12 February at 4.30pm at the University of Oxford Computing Laboratories in Lecture Theatre A. The abstract proves, as usual, very interesting:

Web 2.0 doesn’t just mean user generated content. It also entails a rapid shift to cloud computing for mainstream consumers. As our work and lives migrate from desktops that we control to servers that we do not, startling opportunities for regulation arise. Considering examples from next generation consumer products and the latest Web 2.0 mashup platforms, this session explains some of the big social worries that await us with twenty-first century computing — and how we might avoid them.

2008 Herchel Smith Lecture: Rochelle Dreyfuss

Professor Rochelle Cooper Dreyfuss will present the 2008 Herchel Smith Lecture at Queen Mary IP Research Institute at New Connaught Rooms, Great Queen Street, WC2B 5DA. Prof. Dreyfuss will be discussing the ALI’s Project on Transnational Intellectual Property Disputes and Its Impact on Patent Litigation. This event is free, but registration is required.
