GIKII III

Gikii is tons of fun — I’ve presented at the first one (on Japanese anime and copyright) and at the second (on copyright and tattoos). This year’s will be on September 24-25, 2008 and will take place in Oxford, UK and hosted by the Oxford Internet Institute.

As per usual, the co-chairs are Lilian Edwards, Professor of Internet Law, University of Southampton, and Director of ILAWS, and Andres Guadamuz, Co-Director, (fo the newly re-branded) SCRIPT Law and Technology Centre at the University of Edinburgh.

So if you…

have a paper burning for the oxygen of publicity on any aspect of law AND technology, science, geek culture, blogs, popular culture, wikis, science fiction or fantasy, computer games, digital culture, gender on-line, MMORPGS, virtual property or online human personae, then come to the third edition, GikIII.

Promusicae: Fundamental Rights of File Sharers and the Enforcement of Intellectual Property – EU and IT Perspectives

File sharing and IP enforcement talk at Southampton featuring Professors Gerrit Betlem and Lilian Edwards and billed as a joint event with the European Law Forum and ILAWS. They suggest reviewing:

“Intellectual Property, Competition and Parallel Trade”

Christopher Stothers of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP and author of Parallel Trade in Europe will be discussing the intersection between IP, competition and parallel imports at an AHRC Research Centre for Studies in IP and Technology Law lecture in Edinburgh.

BFIIN Event 2008

The British Female Inventors and Innovators Network is having an awards event in Cardiff. This looks like a good networking opportunity type of event for those interested in IP and business opportunities (as opposed to conferences about the law itself.

Lessons of the Microsoft Case

Professor Rochelle Cooper Dreyfuss will present the 2008 Herchel Smith Lecture at Queen Mary IP Research Institute at New Connaught Rooms, Great Queen Street, WC2B 5DA. Prof. Dreyfuss will be discussing the ALI’s Project on Transnational Intellectual Property Disputes and Its Impact on Patent Litigation. This event is free, but registration is required. BILETA 2008 – Glasgow

The 23rd annual installment of the British and Irish Law, Education, and Technology Association (BILETA) conference will take place at Glasgow Caledonian University with the theme “Law Shaping Technology; Technology Shaping the Law”. The conference has an extended call for pape — due by 15 February(PDF). Keynotes are Prof David Wall (Leeds) and David Flint (MacRoberts). One of the things that I have a personal interest in and pushed for at this conference — an open access panel — will also be happening.

The conference theme has a very Web2.0 feel:

“Security and privacy of our personal information is becoming a central theme with the rise in social networking technologies and user generated content. Have sites such as Facebook and YouTube responded in a timely and effective manner to safeguard our data, whilst promoting our rights to free speech.

Technology to combat crime, and technology used to assist in crime will also be a central theme of the conference.”

Duncan Bucknell is an IP strategist, author of the IP Think Tank blog, and solo practitioner has come all the way from Australia to “discuss some recent trends in IP Strategy across the globe and what to watch in 2008.” From the SOLO IP group announcement:

Intellectual Property Strategies at QMIPRI
